Obamacare Exemptions
The Infographic to the right highlights a number of personal situations that exempt Americans from the individual responsibility requirement — better known as the health insurance mandate.
Obamacare Exemptions include:
- You have been uninsured for less than three months in current year
- You are the member of a recognized healthcare ministry
- The least expensive QHP is more than 8% of your household income
- Your income is low enough so that you do not need to file a tax return
- You belong to a Federally recognized Indian Tribe
- You are incarcerated
- You are not lawfully present in the United States
- You belong to a religious sect with religious objections to health insurance.
In addition, there are a number of "hardship" exemptions, that in some cases are difficult to document, including:
- You were homeless
- you received a shut off notice from utility provider
- You recently experienced a death of family member
- You filed for bankruptcy in past 6 mo.
- You had unexpected inc. in expenses to care for ill, disabled, or aging family member
- You lost individual insurance plan was cancelled and other Obamacare options are unaffordable
- You were evicted in past 6 mo. or facing eviction or foreclosure.
- You are victim of domestic violence
- You experienced natural disaster or fire or flood that caused major damage to your property
- You had medical expenses you couldn't pay in past 2 yrs.
- You were ineligible for Medicaid because your state didn't expand Medicaid under ACA
- You experienced another hardship in obtaining health insurance
among others.
