Health Insurance Options With Affordable Premiums
The 2026 Federal Health Care Marketplace is officially open for business as of November 1st and will run through January 15th, 2026. The deadline for coverage starting on January 1, 2026 is December 15th. For
those who enroll in a health plan between December 16th and January 15th, coverage will likely begin on February 1st.
In addition, many states operate their own state based health insurance exchanges. Several of these individual states have an Open Enrollment Period that also begins on November 1st (alongside healthcare.gov) but extends longer than the federal marketplace in some cases.
During the open enrollment period, health insurance shoppers can enroll in Affordable Care Act (ACA) health plans offered by private health insurance companies (like Blue Cross Blue Shield® and other top carriers). Much of the
time, shoppers will be entitled to income based subsidies that will reduce their out-of-pocket costs for health insurance premiums. In years past, as many as 85% of health insurance shoppers were eligible for these subsidies. Plans change from
year to year so it makes sense to compare quotes and see if you can lower your rates.
ACA health plans are not right for everybody as all individuals and families have unique healthcare needs. In addition to ACA health plans, there are MANY other affordable health plan types available 365 days a year such as short-term health
plans and health sharing plans, among others.
Short Term Plans in particular can be very good options. They are typically very affordable and can go into effect at midnight of the day you enroll. Meaning you don't have to wait until the 1st day of month etc. for coverage to be
effective. Plans are typically available from top carriers such as Blue Cross Blue Shield®, Anthem®, UnitedHealth®, Humana® and Aetna® among other top rated plans*.
